How to Buy and Store Coffee

It's time to buy coffee for your pantry. Do you want to buy the same coffee and before? Do you want to continue to get ground beans to get so-so coffee, or do you want to try something new? So you decide to do things a little differently.

    Read the label to know what you are getting. Below is list of commonly used terms:
    • Estate beans are beans sourced from the same place, as opposed to blends that use a variety of beans to achieve a consistent flavor.
    • Flavored coffee is flavored using liquid agents so that it tastes like chocolate, vanilla or nuts. This type of coffee usually isn't made with the highest quality beans. [1]

    Make coffee buying an entertaining project by using the experience to study the general characteristics of coffee produced in each region. The taste of coffee depends on the soil and geography of where the bean was grown, as well as the way the coffee was roasted. Here are some coffees to try in your search for the perfect cup:
    • Arabian aka mocha - This, the most ancient of coffees, is medium to full-bodied with a rich flavor, dry aftertaste and chocolate tones
    • Brazilian - Medium to moderately dark, sweet and smooth
    • Colombian - Full-bodied, dark roast that's fruity and acidic
    • Costa Rican - Medium-bodied, dry, dark roast
    • Ethiopian - Medium-bodied dark roast that's sweet and fruity
    • Hawaiian - Medium to moderately dark roast that's delicate, dry, sweet and subtle
    • Kenyan - Moderately dark to dark roast that's dry and acidic
    • Sumatran - Full-bodied dark roast that's slightly fermented

    Buy ground coffee in small batches. Instead of buying the economy size can, buy your coffee in small quantities.

    Buy whole bean coffee and use the coffee grinder at your local grocery store if you're buying enough coffee for just the next 2 or 3 days. A lot of stores have coffee grinding machines for everyone's convenience.

    Buy whole enough bean coffee for no more than 2 weeks, and keep it in a cool, dry place until you want to use it.

    Grind the coffee and use it immediately.

    Buy a blade grinder at your local discount department store. It's not the perfect way to grind your coffee, but it will do well enough for 80% of us.

    Go to your neighborhood coffee shop and order a CO² collector. Coffee releases CO² after it has been roasted, and it releases it faster after it has been ground, and CO² weakens the flavor of the coffee. The collector will absorb the CO².


  • If possible, buy coffee from a knowledgeable source such as a local coffee shop or online from companies like Peet's Coffee and Tea, Tully's and Starbucks.
  • Invest in a blade grinder, most cost under $20 and will last a long time if properly cared for.
  • Use the grinder at the supermarket for small quantities. It's free to use with coffee dispensed at the store.
  • Store ground coffee in an air-tight container, in a cool, dark place. Avoid placing it above or near the stove.
  • When grinding coffee, select the grind that is best for your coffee maker or method.
  • Try different roasting techniques to experience different flavors:
    • French Roast - full-flavored, dark beans
    • Italian Roast - medium dark
    • Medium or Light Roast - anything lighter than Italian Roast. Light roast beans are usually sourced from Central America.
  • You can also try roasting your coffee at home using a popcorn popper.
  • If you are buying canned coffee at the grocery store, 100% Colombian or Hawaiian-blend beans are usually the best quality you can find.


  • Never grind more coffee than you will use for immediate brewing. Once the beans are ground, the flavorful oils are exposed to the damaging air. As these oils dissipate, so will the flavor of your coffee. Once ground, coffee will begin to lose its flavor almost immediately.
  • Never store your coffee in the refrigerator. Coffee will absorb flavors and aromas from other food products in your refrigerator. Freezing coffee can also have a similar damaging effect.
  • Don't percolate coffee. It runs the coffee through the grounds continually, burning the coffee and rending the whole mix oily and bitter.
