How to Build a Dog Agility Jump

Want to start your dog in agility but can't afford the expensive equipment? Build your own using these step by step instructions.

Steps

    Buy PVC pipe. You can purchase it from Lowe's or Home Depot.

    One jump consists of 2 standards (the vertical poles) and 2 horizontal poles.

    Cut 2 12" sections of PVC these will be the bases

    Slide a 4 way PVC connector into the middle of each of the bases.

    Place end caps on the ends of the bases.

    Now you have your 2 base pieces. Cut a piece of PVC pipe that is 36" to 48" (use 36" for smaller dogs)

    Attach the pole you just cut to your 2 bases.

    Now cut 2 more pieces, the height will vary based on your dogs jumping height smaller dogs won't need standards higher than 36" and larger dogs won't need standards higher than 40".

    Attach the poles you just cut into the remaining place on the 4 way PVC connector (the poles should be vertical.)

    Put end caps on the top of the vertical poles.

    Now mark measurements on the standards in 2" increments

    Attach the jump cups, you can purchase them off eBay or make them by cutting T shaped connectors.

    Cut one more pole the same length as the pole used to connect the 2 bases and place it in the jump cups at the desired height.

    Finally you can decorate the standards, this may involve using colored tape or spray paint.

Tips

  • If your jumps fall over pour sand in the bases.
  • If your jump connectors won't stay in place buy some glue and glue the connectors to the PVC
  • Make sure the poles for the jump can be knocked off by your dog if he accidentally hits it.

Warnings

  • Be careful when cutting the PVC pipe and wear safety goggles.

If your dog is old do not glue in case it hits the jump.

  • If you use glue be careful, as the glue dries extremely quick.
