How to Break a Coconut with a Stone

Fresh coconut is often the best form of coconut for eating and cooking with. When you have a coconut though, it can prove difficult to open at home. Using the stone method explained here, you should find it a lot easier to open than struggling with fancy tools.

    Select a coconut.

    Find a suitable large stone. It must be large enough to make an impact on the coconut but small enough to be comfortably held by your hand.

    Place a few cloth pieces underneath the coconut. This is to avoid the breaking any floor tile beneath. It will also hold the coconut in place, ensuring that it does not move when struck.

    Place the stone on the coconut so as to select the point to break it.

    Raise the stone to good height above the coconut.

    Move the stone with firm force towards the coconut. In case the coconut does not break at this point, simply repeat the process once again.

    Expect the coconut to split open. Hitting the coconut with the pressure allows it to break into pieces.

    Gather the coconut water if wished but you'll only be able to capture whatever remains cradled in the broken pieces. You can now use the coconut flesh for eating or cooking with.

Tips

  • You can use a hammer instead of a stone if it's easier.
  • Remove the outer fibres of the coconut by peeling them off with help of screwdriver.
  • It is possible to reverse the process; hitting the coconut on the stone placed on cloths (which are already on ground) is sometimes more effective.
