How to Boil Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are edible storage roots grown in the United States of America. The flesh is orange, moist and sweet. Sweet potatoes contain a variety of vitamins including calcium, beta carotene and vitamin C. This is how to boil sweet potatoes.

Method 1
Peeling Before Boiling Instructions

    Wash the sweet potatoes that you plan to boil by placing them under running water and rubbing them all over with your fingers to get any dirt or growth off.

    Scrape the skin off of the sweet potato with a vegetable peeler thoroughly until all you see is the under-layer of flesh.

    Cut the scraped sweet potatoes into quarters.

    Locate a pot large enough to accommodate all of the sweet potato quarters that you want to boil.

    Fill the pot 3/4 full of water, and bring the water to a boil on the stove.

    Drop the sweet potato quarters carefully into the boiling water. If you are not careful you may scald yourself, so drop them slowly and remove your hand quickly.

    Lower the heat of the stove so that the water is simmering, and leave the sweet potato quarters cooking for 20 to 30 minutes.

    Pour the water and the sweet potato quarters into a colander to drain as soon as they are cooked and tender.

    Mash or puree the sweet potatoes according to your preference using a potato masher or a ricer.

Tips

  • Make sure there is enough water in the pot to cover all the sweet potatoes you are putting in it. If there is not, then you may want to stop adding sweet potatoes to the first batch and boil more in a second batch.
