How to Block from the Running Back Position

All running backs, at some point or another, must protect their quarterback. Either during pass protection, or possibly on a read option. Here are a few basic things that will help you block larger, stronger opponents.

    Use leverage to your advantage. Nine out of ten times, if you're playing the running back position, you're not the size of a defensive end or middle linebacker. So, in order to block these larger players, leverage is key. Focus on putting your pads against a larger opponents hips. Getting under them, and possibly chopping their legs out, is the best way to block a large defender.

    Bulk up. Not only does bulking up help you become a stronger running back, it'll help you in pocket protection. While defensive lineman and linebackers will still be bigger, you want to be as strong as possible to minimize their advantage.

    Practice good blocking form. There are two situations where running backs will usually block:
    • Stepping up into the pocket to block any missed lineman or blitzing linebackers. When you do this type of blocking, the most efficient way to block a larger opponent in space would be to take out their legs. A good aiming point is their hips.
    • Lead blocking for another running back in a split back formation. In this situation, it's smart to keep your head up, and look for oncoming tacklers. The form you want to take when blocking is to lower your leverage and hit up under a defender's pads. If that doesn't work the first time, then look for opportunities to chop their feet out from under them.


  • If the coach wants it blocked a certain way, then do it. No one person matters on a team. If you don't do your job, then your team will suffer.
  • Don't get down if you miss your first one or two blocks. Practice will make perfect, and when you can block better than other backs, you'll get a chance to run it before them too.


  • Be careful on not bending your back too much when blocking. If you feel a stretch in your back when you push up under an opponents pads, then you need to be careful.
