How to Become ASE Certified

On car repair commercials, you frequently hear that a particular mechanic is ASE certified. If you are an automobile repair technician, you may want to know how to become ASE certified. The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) is an independent organization with non-profit status that exists solely to make auto repair better. 1 of the ways ASE meets its goal is by granting ASE certification to qualified mechanics.

    Get relevant experience. Before being allowed to sit for an ASE exam, automotive service technicians must be able to prove that they have at least 2 years of work experience relevant to the exam being taken.

    Choose a specialization. ASE offers certifications in multiple specialties, covering everything from car and light truck repair, to repair estimating, to alternative fuel systems, to school bus repair. Each certification series offers multiple exams. For example, in the automobile certification, series, you can be certified on engine repair, automatic or manual transmissions, brakes, electric systems, air conditioning, and a host of other car repairs.

    Prepare for the exam. ASE and its partners offer multiple ways for you to prepare for an ASE certification exam. Preparation is essential. Only 2 out of 3 people pass an ASE certification exam on their first try.
    • Take a course. Check with local training companies to see if they offer ASE preparation courses. Technical and vocational schools are also an option for instructor-led classes.

    • Purchase a self-study guide. ASE study guides help you to prepare for the test by giving you a sense of what a test is like. In addition to content specific to the exam you will take, the study guide offers practice exam questions.

    • Purchase a practice test. A practice test allows you to prepare for the exam without the pressure of actually taking the test. These tests are available from the ASE.

    • Familiarize yourself with the test taking system. ASE certification exams are taken on a computer-based testing system. If you have not previously taken a computer-based exam, you should take the ASE tutorial that lets you know how the system works so that you do not lose time on testing day trying to learn the system.

    Register for the test. You must pay the registration fee in advance. Additionally, you should be aware that ASE certification exams are only offered 8 times per year. The exams are offered in more than 300 locations on the test dates.

    Pass the exam. After you have prepared and registered, the only step left is to pass the exam. After your test is graded and you have achieved a passing score, you will join more than 350,000 automotive service technicians who are ASE certified.


  • Don't forget to re-certify. Your ASE Certification only last 5 years. Make sure you've prepared for and taken your exams before the expiration date of your current certification.
  • Automotive service technicians who take and pass the exams for all (or in some cases most) of the exams in a series can be granted ASE Certified Master status.
