How to Be a Tropical Girl

Being a tropical girl can be very fun! If you follow these next few steps you will be a tropical girl in no time at all!

Wear lots of summery outfits. Try shorts and a t-shirt, a tropical skirt and a tank top, or beach clothes. Always wear flip-flops or go barefoot. Also, wear your bathing suit under your clothes. If you're not going in the sea, a pretty sarong is a good cover-up.

Accessorize yourself with shell necklaces, and ocean themed jewelry. You can buy white Puka shell necklaces at your local surf shop or jewelry store. Alternatively, you could make your own with shells on the beach, and string the ones with holes onto a thin string or chain. You can also make your own marine themed jewelry by buying fish or whale shaped beads and stringing them onto a piece of hemp or cord.

Get the right hair. Any hair can be beachy with the right styling, so try loosely curling it if your hair is naturally straight or go natural if your hair has any kind of waves. Decide whether to go for the sun-bleached look or to have exotic looking dark hair. If you want sun bleached hair, dye your hair either very light brown or a golden blond. If you want darker, more exotic hair, dye it black. Regardless of colour, it should be thick while natural-looking waves.

Accessorize your hair with tropical flowers. You can buy fake ones at your local craft store or - if you live in somewhere warm like California - you can pick some. Use hair clips or bobby pins to keep them securely in your hair.

Go to the beach a lot. Swim, surf or just sunbathe on a brightly coloured beach towel.

Have a big shell collection, or buy a pet fish and show him off with pride.

Use mostly tropical scented creams, shampoos, lotions, and perfume. However, don't use too much, because it could get overpowering.

Work for that tan! Almost every beach-like person has a tan from spending time under the sun (see tips and warnings for advice on sun cream)

Get some highlights. Use lemons in your hair to lighten it (if you want curly hair). Be careful not to lighten it too much.

Make sure you have your toenails painted and nails fun colors such as orange, red, yellow, bright blue or green. Try painting mini palm trees, pineapples, and coconuts on your nails. If you can't do these yourself, try going to a salon. Another way to paint your toe nails is clear. Clear is a much more natural color because you can't see it!

Get an outgoing and fun personality. You will get more friends to play typically beach-like sports, such as volleyball.

  • If your perfume comes with a matching moisturizer and shampoo, use them as well to give your scent more power.
  • Tropical scents include passion fruit, grapefruit, coconut and mango. Floral scents also work well in the evenings.
  • To get just the right amount of perfume, spritz it into the air in front of you, then walk into it before it settles. It will give you a subtle fragrance that is neither too overbearing nor too light to notice.
  • Always wear sun lotion with a factor suitable to your skin - the fairer your skin, the higher factor sun lotion you will need. Very pale skin will need Factor 50+.
  • If you burn easily, consider using a tinted moisturizer instead of spending hours in the sun. Resist the urge to put on loads at once, or you'll get the orange look so favoured by celebrities.
  • Wavy hair is the preferred look but try a simple ponytail with strands loose like when you get out of the water.

  • Drink plenty of water to keep yourself from getting dehydrated.
  • Don't go to a tanning salon, it is a cause of skin cancer and is not good for your body.
  • Don't wear flip-flops when you are biking, it might result in injury.
  • If you see any signs of sunstroke, go into the shade immediately and cover up well. Symptoms include: headaches, shallow and rapid breathing, nausea, dizziness and dark brown urine.
  • Be careful if you have sensitive skin not to burn.
  • Stay out of the sun between 11am and 1pm. This is when it is hottest, and you are most at risk of burning.
  • Don't go into the sea if there isn't a lifeguard on duty, and always keep an eye out for signs warning you of strong currents.
  • Dark hair will make fair skin look even paler.
