How to Be a Cool and Creative Teenager

Do you know those kids at school who are so carefree? Not the popular kids, but the kids who do everything according to themselves. From their personality down to their clothes, they're cool, and creative. You can be like that too!

Be yourself. Think of what you like, and what you don't like. Not: "Well... this is in style, so I like it." or "my best friend likes it, so I like it to". Instead, stand by what you enjoy and believe. Do you like to hang out with your family, even though it's 'uncool' (by society's standards)? Who cares? If you like to do it, do it.

Wear funky clothes (funky, in this instance, means unconventional and unique). They really perk up your self-esteem. Think about how you want to be portrayed, and find clothes that live up to that description. If you want to look artsy, look for garments with interesting details and and vintage/art-inspired patterns. If you want to look poetic or literary, look for Renaissance-inspired shirts and romantic or gothic accessories. Do not limit yourself to shirt/pants/shoes. wear ties for belts, tunics for dresses, suit jackets with jeans, and other different combinations. Experiment, experiment! The worst thing you can do is accidentally wear something you don't like. But try not to look too dorky either. Make sure the colors don't clash and don't wear polka dots with plaid, etc.

Socialize. Talk, laugh, joke, and spend quality time with your friends and acquaintances. Try to become well-known and well-liked; just remember, don't let other people's opinions of you become more important than your opinion of yourself.

Eat well and exercise. If you exercise, you will be much more confident, happier, healthier, able to eat more, and less stressed. Don't check your weight everyday. It'll just depress you. As a teenager, your weight fluctuates (this is especially true of girls). You are maturing, so don't be upset if you gain weight. If you eat well and get regular exercise, worrying about your body is not necessary.

Have a unique, expressive hairstyle. If you can't decide what you like, look around. There are neat hairstyles everywhere just waiting to be emulated! Wear your bangs long, your layers short, accessorize with bows, headbands, ribbons and hats, spike it, tip the edges white. There are a million different possibilities. Come up with something unique that boosts your confidence and shouts creative.

Try new foods and compare and contrast. Come up with kooky combinations, and try to learn to appreciate foreign food. Many teenagers are stuck in a junk food rut. Try to be different!

Be happy. If you're having a bad day, make a list of what you like about yourself. Clichéd, but easy. If this doesn't work, make a list of what you are unhappy about and tear it up. Or burn it, but make sure you have parental affirmation before starting any sort of fire. Think about what you have to be grateful for and show it.

Care about others. It will make you feel good, and people will want to be your friend.

Join a sport or a club that you like, or take up a new, interesting hobby. Sports especially have the potential to create awesome groups of friends and keep you in shape at the same time. Clubs, youth ministries, and other such organizations can help build a friend base which will boost your confidence, improve your quality of life, and give you valuable people skills.

Put yourself in a challenging, eyes-on-you situation. Give a speech at church. Recite something you've written at a poetry slam. Run for class president. As you grow more audacious, you'll feel far better about yourself.

Follow any religious beliefs you have, regardless of what other people think. Remember, you have to live with yourself and the choices you make. Make good choices and save yourself from regret and grief. Most Americans are Christian, particularly Baptist. You can try attending a Catholic church or try Buddhism or Hindu, or even Islam, despite of what the media thinks of them.

  • Don't try to be someone else
  • Express how you feel.
  • Just go for it. If you have a great idea for anything, whether it be a punchline you just came up with or a great way to ask that pretty girl across the street to the prom, don't hesitate. Audacity is its own reward!
  • Wear what you like.
  • Think of things you feel people would never have thought of, and do it.

  • Don't dive in at the deep end - take it slowly. Start by making your lists, don't spend as much time on frivolous, uncreative activities. Instead, spend more time with your friends, then funk up your hair/wardrobe. If you suddenly try to make a zillion friends, you may seem eager. Eager can equal annoying. This isn't to say that you shouldn't make new friends. Just don't force yourself onto a billion people. People will like you if you take it slow and treat them kindly.
