How to Bake a Two Layer Cake

Two layered cakes are twice the deliciousness of a one layered cake. The great thing about having two layers is what you can put in the middle, such as cream, frosting, jelly/jam, preserves or other sweet items that will hold the layers together and improve the flavor.

Ingredients

  • Cake ingredients as per your chosen recipe
  • Filling (frosting, jelly/jam, melted chocolate, whipped cream, etc.)
  • Frosting for whole cake (optional)
  • Edible decorative items

Part 1
Making the cake

    Check the recipe and the supplies. The recipe will need to provide bake times for two cakes and you'll need two 8" or 9" round pans.
    • If you don't have two round pans and/or the recipe doesn't have bakes times for two cakes, carefully cut the cake in half with a cake leveler. If you don't have one, use a knife or something similar. Alternatively, cook the cakes separately, although this will take longer.

    Bake the cake according to the recipe's directions.

Part 2
Frosting and filling the cake

    Frost one piece of the cake on the top side only.
    • You can use frosting, whipped cream, preserves, jelly/jam, melted marshmallows and other sweet items to spread on the cake top as filling instead. Choose whatever goes well with the flavor and texture of the cake.

    Place the other cake on top on the filling just added. Do so with care, making sure it's evenly placed.

    Frost the entire cake. Use whatever frosting you prefer.
    • Alternatively, leave the cake unfrosted. The filling will already be rich enough and too much frosting can make the cake too rich to enjoy.

    Decorate as needed.

    Cut and serve. Alternatively, wait until it's time to eat it, then cut and serve.

  • Make sure your hands are clean.
