How to Avoid Copper Theft

Most people would not think of copper inside of air conditioners to be valuable property. However, criminals can sell that metal for between $50 and $100, and replacing it will cost you thousands of dollars. Of course, no one would want this to happen to them, but how do you prevent it. There are a few ways to help protect your air conditioning vent.

Place motion sensors around the air conditioning vent. Many people have motion sensors by their door, but the vent to get in will be in a dark place behind your home. A sneaky dark alley is the perfect place for a criminal to sneak in.

Mark your copper coils with spray paint. A thief will be less likely to grab something with an identifying mark. You could even write a phone number or street address to make it seem important. They would not take that, for the fear of being caught.

Lock the doors with a padlock. These can help to deter robbers, as they will not be able to get in. Make sure to put your keys in a safe place.

Alternatively, build a small fence around your house. A fence can prevent robbers from getting to your house. Make sure that you can still get out of your house though.

If you have a home alarm system, get a pressure gauge for the air conditioning system. If a line is cut, a pressure gauge can tell you that it has, and go off. This can be a great way to defend the copper.

Join a neighborhood watch program or start one. This can be a great way to educate others about the dangers of robbery. Take notice of vacant properties in your neighborhood, which could be used as a meeting point for the group.

If you think that you have been breached, call the police immediately. The police can help track down the person who stole your copper, saving you thousands of dollars on buying a new one.

  • Motion sensor lights can be a great idea, because they will turn on, alerting robbers that there is someone there.
  • If you have home insurance, the company can help to replace the copper. Having home insurance will lower the cost of a replacement.
  • A/C Trax units can be used to secure air conditioners and heat pumps.

  • Even after following all of these steps, there is still a chance that you could be robbed. If this happens, call the police.
