How to Automatically Fill Your Decorative Garden Fountain

Do you have a small, decorative garden fountain that loses water slowly to evaporation and leakage. Without attention, it goes dry, and soon the pump pumps nothing but air. This article will show you an inexpensive system that fixes the problem!

Steps

    Unplug and drain the fountain.

    Run a small, unobtrusive hose up the center of the fountain and into the water bowl. (Try a black 1/4 inch hose and drilled 1/4" holes to route the hose. The hose should terminate in the water bowl, below the level you wish to maintain.)

    Ensure there are no kinks in the hose, and seal all penetrations with waterproof silicone caulk.

    Mount a mechanical float valve (from hardware store) in a plastic bucket, and place the bucket on a stake. The bucket should be positioned such that the water level in the bucket is the same height from the ground as the desired water level in the fountain. Conceal the bucket behind a bush or tree.

    Connect a garden hose to the mechanical float valve, on the outside of the bucket. Necessary fittings can be obtained from any hardware store.

    Connect other end of garden hose to spigot.

    Run the tube from the bottom of the fountain to the bottom of the bucket (fitting obtained from hardware store). Take care to conceal the tube under bushed, mulch, etc.

    Fill and re-energize the fountain.

    Turn on spigot.

    Check for leaks

    Never manually fill your fountain again.

Tips

  • You have just basically set up a manometer, which is a crude device used for pressure measurement. Because pressure in the bucket and pressure in the fountain's water bowl are equal, the water levels will stay the same. Over time, water will move from the bucket to the fountain to maintain this equilibrium. Water will be replenished in the bucket by the hose and mechanical float valve.
