This guide will not help you become an expert in psychology or make you a psychology guru who can tell what people are thinking by a blink of the eye or move of the finger. This article will give you a reading list to introduce you to the basics of psychology.

    Read Freud. Being the founder of the psychoanalytical movement and the first major figure in psychology and psychiatry, it is only right we begin with him.

    Read Jung. Jung was a student and colleague of Freud who broke away to form his own theory; his works aspects of the masculine and aspects of the feminine are compelling and less confined than Freud's.

    Read Adler. Another colleague of Freud who also broke away to form his own theories, the theory of individual psychology being one. The best place to start is with the neurotic character.

    Study B.F. Skinner. B.F.Skinner was a major figure in behaviorism and his work about behaviorism is a good place to learn about behaviorism.

    Study names like Carl Rogers, Abraham Maslow, and Albert Bandura.

    Learn about the different types of psychology.
    • Humanist psychology was a reaction to behaviourism and psychoanalysis. This was formed by Abraham Maslow, Carl Rogers, and Clark Moustakas. The original works by any one of these authors might provide the clearest insights into humanism.
    • Existential psychology developed along with humanism. This was pioneered by Rollo May; Love and Will and The Courage to Create.
    • Cognitive psychology is a discipline concerned with internal mental processes such as learning, thinking and feeling, Wilhelm Wundt father of experimental psychology and the founders of the Gestalt psychology; Max Wertheimer, Kurt Koffka and Wolfgang K√∂hler.
