How to Approach a Dog That Has Never Met You Before

Some dogs can be dangerous, even deadly if not properly greeted. This is how to approach a dog that doesn't know you.

Steps

    Don't be afraid. Dogs can sense it, and they get ready to attack. Act confident, not looking scared.

    Slowly take small steps up to the dog. Never run, this is a dogs trigger to attack.

    Put your hand out about 4 inches (8 centimeters) away from the dog's face. Don't touch the dog quite yet.

    Let the dog sniff your hand. If they kiss your hand (lick it), then you can lightly pet its back. If not, leave your hand out and if it doesn't whimper, bark, growl, you can lightly pet its back.

    Praise her/her. It will show that you are not meaning any harm. Ask the owner if you can give the dog a treat (if you don't have one, ask "Do you have a treat I can give him/her?).

Tips

  • Never hurt the dog!
  • Be nice!
  • Only pet the dog's back at first, then the head if they seem OK with it. You will be able to sense if they are.

Warnings

  • Never pet the dog's ears! Ask the owner before you do, if you must. Many dogs don't enjoy this!
  • If the dog growls, whimpers, etc., then immediately take your hand away. Wait a minute or so, and try again from the beginning.
