How to Apply Makeup for Cheerleading

If you are a cheerleader, you are going to want to choose a specific look that will suit you and your team. You will have to have to know the colors that suit you. You also need to know what makeup you and your team should wear.

Wash your face with a good facial cleanser made for your skin type. Rinse with cold water. Apply a matching moisturizer and wait for 5 minutes so the moisturizer can sink in. If you don't know what your skin type is, wash with an acne moisturizer and use oil free lotion.

Apply foundation using a foundation brush. Dot some on your forehead, cheeks, chin, and nose. Blend the dots outwards.

Apply concealer under your eyes. If you have any blemishes (spots, insect bites, etc.) apply concealer directly onto the blemish, then dab with your finger until it fades into your skin. Do not rub, as this causes a ring around the blemish making it more obvious.

Put your powder onto the brush, then tap off the excess onto the palm of your hand. Gently brush your face for an even application, but use a little more if a particular area is shiny.

Use a bronzer to contour your face. Apply it under your cheekbones and on your temples. Use a little down the sides of your nose. Avoid shimmery bronzer if you do not know how to apply it and blend it into your skin so that it matches your skin tone well.

Use a shimmer eye shadow that is the same or a similar color to your skin tone first. Then use white or cream to highlight the tear duct and your brow bone. You can also use a darker color, like dark brown, to accentuate your crease, which is the gap between your lid and brow bone, and your lash line.

Apply eyeliner. It is best to use gel eyeliner because it is easy to apply, and also does not smudge if you sweat. Choose one that is black, black-brown, or your team colors. Apply it only on the lash line.

Apply your mascara in long, fluid strokes that cover your entire lashes. Make sure to use waterproof mascara in black or black-brown.

  • Bobbi Brown's gel eyeliner is one of the best eyeliners on the market. You can set it using a black eye shadow.
  • Use a foundation that matches your skin color. If you use a foundation that is too dark, you often end up with an unnatural orange color.
  • Wiggle your mascara wand at the base of your eyelashes to accentuate your eyeliner and create volume.
  • Apply your makeup lightly and follow all makeup rules your squad has.
  • Your eyeliner should be a shade that suits your eyes. Blue eyes look best with a dark brown or grey eyeliner; green eyes can handle dark brown and black, brown eyes can look good in more or less any shade, but it's best to stick to neutral colors for cheerleading.
  • A great mascara to use would be Great Lash by Maybelline.
  • If you decide to wear an eye shadow or an eyeliner that is your teams color, it's best that everyone on the squad does the same thing.
  • Make sure to use waterproof eyeliner and mascara, otherwise when you sweat it will run down your face and it could become a distraction to you and to the others around you.

  • Don't apply eyeliner to the inside rim of your eye. If your eyeliner is flaky, it may get in your eyes.
  • Don't go overboard with your makeup. If you apply lots of dark eyeliner and eyeshadow, from a distance in the crowd you will look like a panda! Also, it can look harsh and possibly make you look depressed. You're supposed to be looking happy, not sad!

Things You'll Need

  • Mascara that doesn't streak or smear.
  • Eyeliner that doesn't streak or smear.
  • Eyeshadow that won't irritate your eyes.
  • (Optional) Lipgloss/Lipstain.
