How to Administer Flonase

Flonase and its generic equivalent, Fluticasone Propionate, are intranasal sprays used to treat allergic and nonallergic rhinitis. This medication is for adults and children aged 4 and older. Flonase is only available by prescription. This article will explain to patients how to administer Flonase.

Method 1
Prepare for Administering Flonase

    Shake the Flonase bottle carefully and remove the clear cap. Point the nozzle away from you.

    Prime your applicator by pressing down on the nozzle 4-to-6 times.
    • You should prime the bottle the 6 times if you are using it for the first time. Prime it until a fine spray comes out if it has been sitting idle for a week or more.

Method 2
Administering the Medication

    Blow your nose to clear mucus out of your nostrils.

    Close off one nostril with the finger of one hand.
    • Lean forward a little and insert the nozzle into the other nostril. Ensure the bottle stays upright in one hand.

    Place your forefinger on one side of the applicator top and your middle finger on the other side of the bottle top.
    • Use your thumb to support the bottom of the bottle.

    Start inhaling and press the applicator firmly to deploy the spray. Breathe in slowly through the open nostril.

    Exhale through your mouth.

    Administer a 2nd spray in that nostril if prescribed by your doctor.

    Wipe off the applicator with a clean tissue and put on the clear cap.

Warnings

  • Your Flonase bottle comes with a pre-measured amount of sprays in it. Do not use it for more than the amount of times on the label, because the correct amount of medication cannot be guaranteed after the labeled amount of sprays.
  • Do not take this medication more often than prescribed.
  • Report any severe or bothersome reactions to your doctor. Get medical attention immediately if you experience symptoms of anaphylaxis, such as difficulty breathing or swelling of your throat and face.
  • Use the number of sprays prescribed to you by your doctor. Your particular dosage may be different from what is described in the patient leaflet due to other medical conditions or the severity of your symptoms.
  • Consult your doctor before using Flonase if you are taking an oral or inhaled corticosteroid such as ritonavir. This can cause a severe drug interaction that can include Cushing Syndrome.
