Three Parts:Determine which MacBook model you ownDetermine how much storage space you needAdding the storage space

Did your MacBook run out of storage space? Use an expansion card in your computer's SD port as a quick and easy way to add up to 256GB of additional space without adding any bulk, or requiring any tools or programming knowledge!

We will be using the computer's SD card port, as seen below;

Part 1
Determine which MacBook model you own

  1. Image titled About this mac.png
Choose About This Mac from the Apple () menu in the upper-left corner of your screen. Click "About this Mac".
  2. 2
On the screen that pops up, click "More Info".
  3. 3
Find the "Computer Model". This is a "MacBook Air".
  4. 4
Find the "Manufacture Year". This computer was manufactured in "Early 2011". Careful not to confuse when the machine was "purchased" with when the machine was "manufactured". The date listed here is the manufacture date which is what is needed.
  5. 5
Purchase the appropriate Storage Expansion module based on the macbook identifier. According to the manufacturer's chart found on, this computer would need the expansion model listed third from the right (A13A). There are six variations and you must choose the appropriate one.

Part 2
Determine how much storage space you need

  1. 1
Decide how much storage space you need. See comparison chart above to suit your needs. With a 128GB card, you can store up to 62,000 photos, 32,000 songs or 1920 min. of Full HD video. With a 256GB card, you can store 2x as much

Part 3
Adding the storage space

  1. 1
Simply insert a Storage Expansion Card into the SD card reader slot on the side of your MacBook to instantly boost your storage capacity. This is a semi-permanent install.
  2. 2
To remove the storage expansion model, just pull it out. For the TarDisk brand modules, all you need is a fingernail (or credit card) to remove the unit. For the MiniDrive brand modules, you need to purchase a special tool or wire to hook and remove the card. All brands function in a similar way, although some are not flush to the side of the computer
  3. 3
That is it, you are done! The model above from is constructed from aluminum; however plastic versions that stick out can also be found online.

Things You'll Need

  • A MacBook computer with an SD card port.
  • An onboard storage expansion module.

  • If you purchase one of the MiniDrive brand models, make sure you do not lose the "tool". If you do loose the tool, try using a piece of wire for removal.
  • Make sure that you use the correct model for your computer as each MacBook requires a different length/size and not all brands support all computers.
  • The expansion module will show up as a secondary drive on your computer's desktop.
