How to Add Related wikiHows

Adding Related wikiHows is another way to weave the web of links. Linking pages allows readers to easily browse the site to dig deeper into a subject.

Part 1
Ways to Add

Method One: Adding from the Header Menu

    Go to the article that is in need of Related wikiHows.

    Click on "Edit" in the floating menu/toolbar at the top of the page.

    Click the "Manage Related wikiHows" option from this drop-down menu.

    Review the instructions: "Enter some search terms to find Related wikiHows and press 'Search'." Locate the search bar right below it.

    Type a search into this box. Use the same ideas as those found in the "Determining What Articles to Use" subsection below.

    Click the "Search" button. Wait for a list to appear below the search.

    Review the list of all the suggested sites. Find a good Related wikiHow article that would suit the article in question.

    Click the plus(+) sign to the right of the requested title. The title you chose will be shown in the white box of "Related wikiHows" at the top of the page.

    Repeat for each item that best suits the article. If you add one accidentally, just highlight it in the box and click "Remove."

    Click the "Save" button to add the Related articles.

Method Two: Adding in Guided Editor

    Click the "Edit" button from the top of the article.

    Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page. Just above the edit summary box, you'll see 4 checkbox buttons. One of which is marked "Related wikiHows".

    Click the checkbox to the left of the "Related wikiHows" box.

    Click into the long bar directly underneath the new section that has now appeared. Type a search term, or, using wikiHow syntax, type the title of an article.

    Select the "requested title" that you want to add. Click the "Add" box.

    Remember to publish your edit at the bottom of the page.

Method Three: Adding Manually in Advanced Editor

    Open the article in Edit mode.

    Add the section "Related wikiHows" by including the section title. Type == Related wikiHows == . It should go below Warnings or Things You'll Need but above Sources and Citations.

    Use correct wiki syntax. Start each one with a bullet point (*) and then type the interwiki link to the related article. When you're typing or pasting in a title, use internal linking - for example: [[Be Cool]] to make the link: Be Cool. A related wikiHow's wikitext can look like either of these:
    • *[[Be Cool]]
    • *[[Be Cool|How to Be Cool]]

    Click Publish to complete your edit. Make sure the Related wikiHows showed up as you intended.

Determining What Articles to Use

    Search for four Related articles. These could be in reference to:

Tips

  • Expand the web. Try clicking on any Related wikiHow, then add Related wikiHows to the next article and so on. Keep the chain going.
  • Add more than four Related wikiHows, if desired. Try not to initially add more than 6 articles to the list. Overuse of Related wikiHows seems to bore the reader and makes the article too long.
  • Only the first four Related wikiHows will appear at the top of the column to the right of each page.
  • Adding Related wikiHows may increase your fan mail, along with your edit count.
  • A link to articles that are completely dead-ends but need Related wikiHows, can be found here.
  • Try to avoid adding Related wikiHow articles that may be in reference to a previous step. Do not add How to Choose a Hamster to How to Get Your New Hamster to Like You. These may be related, but the reader may already have a hamster.
