How to Act Like a Mermaid

Three Methods:Looking Like a MermaidLiving in a Mermaid ParadisePlaying the Part of a Mermaid

If you love mermaids, want to be a pretend mermaid, or just want to try acting like a mermaid for a while, then you've found the right place. Mermaids are beautiful creatures of the sea, maybe you recently became one and need some pointers or perhaps you're just playing mermaid. To act like a mermaid, you have to look the part, walk the walk, and talk the talk.

Method 1
Looking Like a Mermaid

  1. Image titled Act Like a Mermaid Step 01
Have mermaid-worthy hair. The first thing that will make you stand out as a mermaid is your hair, so you should work hard to cultivate that mermaid look. Growing out your hair takes time and patience, but it'll be worth it. Here's how to have perfect mermaid hair:
    • Grow your hair out long. Just below your shoulders or longer is best.
    • If your hair isn't naturally wavy, curl it lightly to give it a natural wave. If you want a more natural wave to your hair without using rollers or a curling iron, try braiding your hair while it's still wet after washing it. Sleep with the braid in and take it out in the morning.
    • Cultivate a healthy shine to your hair. A few ways you can do this is by adding a little bit of vinegar to your hair and rinse it out with cool water instead of warm.
    • Leave-in shampoo, or do a hair mask with eggs, mayonnaise, Aloe Vera, and more.
    • Read the article titled How to Have Soft Shiny Hair Inexpensively for more ways to get soft, shiny, mermaid worthy hair.
    • If it feels right, your hair can be partly wet, especially the tips. This will give you that "I just stepped out of the ocean" look.
    • You can also put water and salt in a squirt bottle and spray your hair a few times to get that ocean, beach look.
    • Get the right hair accessories. Since you're spending so much time under water, put fake starfish, coral combs, or even a sprinkle of sand in your hair to show that you're a true mermaid.
  2. Image titled Act Like a Mermaid Step 02
Have the face of a mermaid. Your face is what everyone will notice after your hair, so it should show everyone that you are the genuine article. Mermaids have a natural look so you don't have to go over the top to achieve it, but there are a few things you can do.
    • Use light blues, greens, and purples to shade the outer corners of your eyes to bring out natural ocean tones. Wear a good, non-clumping black mascara, this gives your face mermaid emphasis.
    • Avoid glitter, it would wash off in the water and give an unnatural look.
    • Wear a light pink lipgloss.
    • Remember to wear water-proof makeup.
  3. Image titled Act Like a Mermaid Step 03
Dress like a mermaid. To dress like a mermaid, you won't need too many items of clothing, but you'll have to wear them the right way. To be a true sea creature, you'll have to pay attention to your top, your bottom, and even your feet. Here's what you should wear:
    • A bikini top that is shapely but not too seductive for the beach is great. Pick a sea-friendly color like blue or purple, and try to find bikini cups that look like shells if you can.
    • For everyday clothes stick to long clothes that flow. This style will remind people of the soft ocean waves.
    • Pair a flowy shirt with a pair of jeans or a crop top with a flowy blue skirt.
    • Remember to stick to ocean colors such as blues, greens, and purples. Pink is also a good color in some cases.
    • Wear flip-flops or sandals with shells on them and keep your shoes casual. Since real mermaids don't wear shoes there's no need to draw attention to your feet. You could even wear water shoes, if you like.
    • Paint your nails and toes a subtle shade of pink, blues, or other ocean colors. If you want to draw more attention to your nails and make them seem more like a mermaid, paint designs on them such as starfish, anchors, or even scales.
  4. Image titled Act Like a Mermaid Step 04
Have mermaid accessories. To be a true mermaid, you have to accessorize like one. Mermaids are too busy swimming to have many accessories, but a few key items can help distinguish you as a mermaid.
    • Wear coral and shell jewelry. Having coral or shell necklaces, earrings, or bracelets can help you stand out as a mermaid.
    • Wear a mood ring to show your complicated mermaid emotions, but remember that some mood rings are cheaply made. Don't wear them for too long, or you will risk having a green finger unless you wash it all the time with soap.
    • Have a small coral purse.

Method 2
Living in a Mermaid Paradise

  1. Image titled Act Like a Mermaid Step 05
Spend as much time near water as possible. To be a true mermaid, not only do you have to look the part, but you should also surround yourself with the typical mermaid environment. Though you don't need to go to the bottom of the ocean to mimic a mermaid's real home, here are some ways to come close:
    • If you live near the ocean, spend your days in the water or on the shore. Always leave a healthy trail of sand wherever you go.
    • If you don't live near the ocean, be near water as much as you can. Spend your time near a lake, a swimming pool, or a river.
    • Spend extra time in the shower. Mermaids love water!
    • If you have time for a vacation, go to an island so you can spend all the time you want near the ocean.
  2. Image titled Act Like a Mermaid Step 06
Have a mermaid-friendly home. Though you should spend as much time near the water as possible, you'll still need to work on cultivating a mermaid-friendly environment inside your home as well. Here are a few easy ways to transform your home into a mermaid's paradise.
    • Ask your parents if you can redecorate your room in an ocean theme.
    • Have a large fish tank filled with all of your favorite sea creatures.
    • Go to the beach and find shells with holes in them.
    • Buy Hawaiian flowers, and beach-like flowers to decorate your room.
    • Have lots of shells hanging up and placed around your home. Use shell plates, coasters, and even cups, if you can.
    • Surround yourself with pictures of the ocean. Paint your walls blue.
    • Surround your bed with fake coral, plants, fake seaweed, and anything else that can make you feel like you're under the sea.
    • Get blue curtains that will look like waves.
    • Use a treasure chest for storing your clothes.

Method 3
Playing the Part of a Mermaid

  1. Image titled Be a Mermaid, for Fun Step 1
Make up a spell. Practice writing it in something no one would find. In sense it is made with your own imagination and you are aware that it is not 100% likely to work, it actually has more chances of working. Just make sure the spell has something to do with being near water or being in/touching works better that way.
  2. Image titled Be a Mermaid, for Fun Step 2
Find out the meaning of your name. Imagine that the meaning of your name has something to do with your destiny. The meaning of your name could also be your mermaid-name, but remember if the meaning of your name is something from the earth it can't be your mermaid name so look up mysterious ocean-like names, such as Kailani and Serena.
  3. Image titled Act Like a Mermaid Step 07
Act mysterious. If you're a mermaid on land then you're probably living a double life. To be a true mermaid, you shouldn't reveal too much about your life underwater and should keep your other identity to yourself as much as you can. However, there are some things you can do to be mysterious in just the right way:
  4. Image titled Ask a Guy to a School Dance Step 07
Be optimistic. Mermaids, are always at awe of the Earth, be optimistic and always look on the bright side of things.
  5. Image titled Get Straight "A"s Step 11
Make a mermaid diary. Have a mermaid notebook where you write down your deepest mermaid thoughts. Always write the Month, Number, Year, and Day, and start with the words, "Dear Mermaid Diary," to make sure the person who is reading it can see you're being a mermaid. You can get some ideas for a mermaid journal at Write a Mermaid Journal.
    • Write longingly in the notebook. When anyone approaches, pull it to your chest like it's a secret!
    • Reference your under-the-sea friends and then act embarrassed for bringing them up.
    • Say things like, "No one understands the ocean like I do," or "I could never eat a fish. Fish are our friends!"
  6. Image titled Enjoy Your Last Night on a Carnival Cruise Step 09
Act crazy on a full moon or new moon night - go out and stare at it if you can see a full moon.
    • Excuse yourself to go outside saying you left your purse outside. Secretly bring a purse, or leave a purse underneath a car if it's outside.
    • The next day pretend the spell is broken, and that you had no idea what happened after you stared at the moon the night before.
    • Become a mermaid for a long time - become a Siren.
    • Try to show people your mermaid secret - anything that is not like you.
    • Run off unexpectedly without explanation. Just say something like, "I'm wanted" and then run toward the ocean.
  7. Image titled Dance Hip Hop Step 18
Watch mermaids. Watch some mermaid movies and shows, like "The Little Mermaid". And watch mermaid television shows. Like "H2O" and "Mako Mermaids (An H2O Adventure). Mermaids love to watch other mermaids swimming in the water, and transform.
  8. Image titled Act Like a Mermaid Step 08
Sing, and sing a lot! A true mermaid sings beautifully and skillfully, whether to herself or for an audience. This is the most distinct feature of a mermaid and you should play it up whenever you can. You can even try and sing to attract a guy's attention (mermaids are known for that).
    • Even if you're not naturally a good singer, practice singing as much as possible.
    • Sing to yourself all the time. Pretend to be caught off guard when one of your friends walks in while you're singing.
    • If it's not the right time for singing, hum to yourself.
    • Have a look of longing and melancholy when you sing as if you're thinking about your life in another world.
  9. Image titled Act Like a Mermaid Step 09
Mermaids are known for their wonderful swimming. Learn how and practice swimming. You can even buy a monofin (a special fin made to swim like a dolphin. You can even look for companies online that make special underwater, swimmable costumes.
    • Swim like a fish. A true mermaid should have impeccable swimming skills. She should be more comfortable in the water than on land. Make swimming your second nature.
    • Make a point of swimming as much as possible. Use swimming as a form of exercise. If you're a great runner, learn to be a great swimmer instead.
    • Mermaids can breathe underwater. Practice going underwater for a reasonably long time without coming up for air. When you do come up for air, don't be obvious about it.
    • When you swim, put your legs and feet together. Remember that you don't have separate legs! You can also purchase a mermaid tail, such as Fin Fun or Mertailor.
  10. Image titled Act Like a Mermaid Step 10
Act slightly bewildered by the world. Mermaids are at home in the ocean and are slightly confused by and afraid of life on land. To act like a mermaid, you need to act confounded by perfectly ordinary things, or find strange uses for normal items. Here's what to do:
    • Act confused by technology, especially computers, cell phones, and televisions. You don't have those underwater.
    • Always be a little confused by how your legs work, and walk with uncertainty. Trip if you can do so safely.
  11. Image titled Act Like a Mermaid Step 11
Find other sea creatures to hang out with. Being a mermaid on your own can be lonely, and if you find some fellow sea creatures, not only will you make some friends, but your act will be more convincing.
    • Ideally, find a few other mermaids to hang out with. You'll look more convincing in groups.
    • Find a merman to call your own then spend most of your time together in the water.
    • Find other sea creatures, such as starfish, crabs, or tropical fish to add to your coterie.
    • Get a Mermaid tail and wear it. How can you be a mermaid without the tail of a mermaid?

  • If you are scared to do this when people are around, practice being a mermaid in the comfort of your own home before you take your act into the world.
  • Don't wear too many flashy things. Try not to wear plastic or cheap looking things, since real mermaids don't wear plastic.
  • If you can afford one, some online retailers sell fake mermaid tails for swimming.
  • Try to find some clam shells at the beach with a hole in them to make a necklace.
  • Mermaids love to collect shells, so collect some underwater.
  • If you get wet, and no one sees you, dry off, and pretend you never got wet. It will catch on.
  • Swim in a pop-up pool, or a pool in your backyard for more privacy.
  • When you watch mermaids, act like you love to see them in mermaid form rather than human form.
  • When you write your diary, draw pictures to get the person's attention.

  • Don't act freaked out that much, or else your friends will think you are acting weird.
  • Don't lose your diary. Someone can tell everyone in the world what's in it.
  • If your friend finds out you're a mermaid and tells anyone, you could wind up in an aquarium or "exposed".
  • If your friend finds out you are a fake mermaid, they may become your enemy.
  • Understand that if you are already a real mermaid you wouldn't need to use this article, so realize that you are pretending!
  • If you are an experimental Mermaid you could be in danger!
