How to Accept a Diploma

Are you worried you'll be awkward and clumsy when you go on stage to accept your diploma? Don't worry, just relax and follow this advice!

Steps

    If your school has a rehearsal, go! If there's anything you need to know, they'll tell you then. It's also a good chance to become comfortable walking onto the stage, and you'll probably get good advice.

    Confidently walk onto the stage. Make sure you don't trip on your gown!

    Look the presenter in the eye. Take the diploma in your left hand.

    Reach over the diploma with your right hand to shake the presenter's hand.

    Move the tassel on your hat or allow the presenter to do it for you.

    Walk offstage.

    Return to your seat.

    After everyone's done, some places have hat-throwing and speeches. That you can do relaxed, don't worry if you're a klutz now!

Tips

  • Details are different according to the school's decisions. Check up on these well in advance of the graduation ceremony.
  • Remember to breathe!
  • If there are photographers, you might need to pose for a photo while taking the diploma.
  • Smile!
  • Remember to be gracious--thank the presenter!

Warnings

  • Try not to slouch when walking, it does not look good in photos and a lot of people will notice.
  • Don't shake the presenter's hand too hard, it's very rude and the you want to make a good lasting impression.
